DO YOU HAVE A TROUBLED HEART?
By Greg Hooker
Are you suffering from a troubled heart? Has extenuating circumstances robbed you of joy and peace? Is the chaotic world keeping you up at night and leaving you in fear and uncertainty? If so, then Jesus has some words of comfort that will settle our souls and give us relief from depression, anxiety, and the cares of this world. He said “... let not your heart be troubled...” (John 14:1).
Plain, simple, and concise!
Jesus is fully aware of the influences of the world, flesh, and the Devil upon our bodies, minds, and souls. Remember, He was tempted and tested just as you and I, yet without sin. He understands the trials, troubles, and temptation we face on a daily basis. But in light of that fact He tells us “let not your heart be troubled”!
When Jesus talks about your heart, He is referring to your inner-most self, your soul, which makes up who you truly are. Your soul is comprised of your emotions, beliefs, and thoughts. It is the part of you that lives on when your body dies.
So Jesus says “let not your heart (soul) be troubled”. Here are 10 ways to do this:
1. Maintain a close relationship with the Lord. Put Him first in every area of your life.
2. Read, meditate, and follow God’s Word. The Bible is the only perfect source to live by. It’s our moral compass.
3. Pray earnestly without ceasing (be in an attitude of constant prayer). Talk to Jesus and share your most intimate concerns and needs.
4. Forget the past, live for the now, and press for the future. Don’t allow yourself to be stuck in the past where it’s impossible to change.
5. Slow down and refuse to worry about things you have no control over.
6. Recognize we live in a world saturated by sin, but Christ has already conquered sin. If you are born again, your past, present, and future sins are under the blood of Christ on the Mercy Seat in Heaven - forgotten and forgiven!
7. Rest in the fact that Christ will protect and preserve His children throughout eternity. What Christ has purchased, He will certainly take excellent care off.
8. Remember that sorrow lasts for a little while, but joy comes in the morning.
9. Make a concerted effort to “tune out” the malignant whispers of the Devil. Satan will cause you to go crazy with his lies, doubts, and whisperings in your mind if you let him.
10. Relinquish total control to the One who sees all, hears all, and controls all. God is Sovereign and sees your life from beginning to end. Yet He allows you free will to choose the paths you travel on, so choose wisely.
My friends, it’s not worth allowing yourself to live a miserable life when we have victory in Christ. A life of no joy simply isn’t the plans God has for you. So take the advise of the Savior and “let not your heart be troubled”!
