GOD GOVERNS IN THE AFFAIRS OF MEN
By Greg Hooker
Benjamin Franklin was the elder statesman (81 years old) at the Constitutional Convention of 1787 in Philadelphia. There, he urged the Assembly toward daily prayer to seek guidance from “the Father.” In doing so, he said this:
“I have lived a long time, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth—that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid?”
Franklin was echoing what the Bible says in the book of Daniel,
“...to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.” - Daniel 4:17
My friends and brethren in Christ, we may see things that question the hearts and motives of man. We may wonder why the Almighty allows the “basest” of men to rule our governments. We may question why God allows seemingly unrepentant sinners to rule over us.
The fact is we will never understand the “why” of the ways of God on this side of eternity, but one thing is for certain, God knows what He is doing and is in constant control over the affairs of His creation.
His wisdom far exceeds ours. His ways may seem unseemly to our limited knowledge. His motives may not align with our plans, but He is the Sovereign of the universe who counts the stars of the heavens and names each one. He knows each grain of sand on the beaches of the seas and numbers the hairs of our heads. He is God, the Great IAM.
So my beloved, “let not your heart be troubled”. Leave it to the Sovereign. Trust and embrace His unfailing words penned in the Scriptures. Live and meditate on His Word. Seek His guiding Spirit. Resist His adversary the Devil and be careful of his deceitful ways. For Satan has the ability to transform himself into an “angel of light”.
Never forget, whatever happens in this sin-cursed-world, your Savior surrounds you with His protective love. Nothing in Heaven nor in the earth is “able to separate you from love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord”! Nothing!
