HOW’S YOUR SPIRITUAL TASTE?
- Pastor Greg Hooker
As human beings God gave us the ability to try and taste all sorts of food. The day I first tasted sausage, biscuits and gravy was the day that made getting up in the morning a delight! Mom would get up early and make homemade biscuits and sausage gravy in an old iron skillet. Coupled with a cup of hot coffee there was nothing better!
But I want to discuss a different kind of taste, and believe it or not, it’s better than gravy and biscuits. The Psalmist said:
“O taste and see that the LORD is good ...” - Psalm 35:8
I venture to say many Christians go through life and never experience what the “taste of the Lord” means. O they are saved and born-again, but they are missing out on the best part of living for Jesus.
What does it mean to “taste the Lord”? I’m glad you asked.
Well let’s return to our analogy of biscuits and gravy. The first time you taste it your taste buds do a happy dance and you say “where have you been all my life?” (Since this is a Southern comfort food, you Northerners can substitute your food of choice).
That’s kinda how it is with Jesus. When a young, or even an old person gets a good taste of the goodness of Jesus Christ they say “where have you been all my life?”
I remember the first time this happened to me. It was shortly after I gave my heart to Jesus and received Him as Savior and Lord. I started to read my Bible for the first time and I simply couldn’t get enough! I gorged myself of the milk of the Word and it didn’t take me long until I wanted the “meat” of the Word (or you could say the biscuits and gravy of the Word)!
Later I came across a book by Oliver B. Greene on the book of Revelation. Wow! I couldn’t put it down! For the first time in my life God was spoon feeding me all these types of food and my taste buds were going wild! That’s what it means to “taste and see that the Lord is good...”
Sadly, however, many Christians remain babies or juveniles after getting saved. They never really get a good taste of the milk of the Word of God. As a result, they remain spiritually trapped in an infants body, malnutritioned and anemic. It’s a sad place to be.
So wether you are a newborn or an older person in Christ, let me tell you this .......
“YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE MISSING!”
Get out your Bible, fork and spoon and dig in. Fatten yourself on the goodness of God’s vitamin-reach Word! Let it give you strength. Let it fill you till your about to explode. Let it start a growth spurt that when people look at you they want to know why you have changed so much. Don’t go through life a spiritual weakling eating tofu and seaweed. It just won’t be enough to satisfy your hungry soul.
