OLD FASHION
By Greg Hooker
“Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.” Jeremiah 6:16
I have to admit, in many ways I am “Old Fashion”, and the older I get the more I become as such. Am I proud of the fact? You better believe it! I’m far from perfect, but I still have some moral values, respect for others, and reject the Devils evil schemes to the best of my ability.
I try to “stand”, as Jeremiah said in the verse quoted above, “in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths”. There is so much that has changed over the years and much of it isn’t good. People haven’t evolved, or become better, they have devolved and become more self centered and proud. Instead of getting better, many people with and without Christ have become morally bankrupt. The god of this world has blinded their eyes lest they discover the truth of the Word of God and be saved.
The Prophet Jeremiah made it plain we would find “rest to our souls” if we walked in the “old ways”, the ways in which God has instructed His people. But the people of his day refused to “walk therein”.
Today nothing has changed except we are far worse than in Jeremiah’s day. For examples,
⁃ We change the word of God to fit our own needs and desires.
⁃ We don’t like true, sin convicting preaching and teaching.
⁃ We love sermons that make us “feel good” and tickle our ears.
⁃ We don’t love our neighbors like we once did.
⁃ We care more for ourselves than those lost without Christ.
⁃ We care little for those in need.
⁃ We show little respect for the Preacher and the church.
⁃ We dress with less and less clothing covering our nakedness.
I think we get the basic idea. I think it’s time we return to the “old-fashion” values the Bible speaks of. Why? Because the Word of God never changes. It is truth without error given to us to model our lives by. If we follow its truth, we can be assured to please our Creator.
So it’s okay if you call me old fashion. In fact, it’s a great compliment! What about you?
