Chapter 2:5-10
VERSE BY VERSE STUDY ON THE BOOK OF ROMANS
By Pastor Greg Hooker
ROMANS 2:5-10
5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
Verse 5
“But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;”
“But after thy hardness”
The word "hardness" is used to denote insensibility of mind (or heart) - a mind impervious of the nature of God to penetrate it. Like a stone the things of God just deflect off it (Matthew 26:25; Acts 19:9). It no longer has any desire for the things of the Lord, thus God has given them over to a reprobate mind, a mind void of understanding right from wrong. Here it expresses a state of mind where the goodness and forbearance of God have no effect.
“Impenitent heart”
A heart which is not affected with the sorrow for sin in light of the mercy and goodness of God. This is an explanation of what Paul meant by “hardness”.
“Treasurest up”
This means to accumulate, or to increase in material ‘things’. It has the idea of hoarding. But this passage also refers to hoarding up emotions like hate, vengeance, and wrath. It may be noted here, that most people that know not God, and many that do, have hoarded treasures of this kind.
It’s also a state in which a person collects and stores up all sorts of evil notions that begin to fester, ferment, and grow until one day they burst forth in rage upon some unfortunate soul. Pent up rage is a very dangerous state to be in. They are like ticking time bombs set to go off at any moment.
“Unto thyself wrath”
This is the day when God shall show or execute His wrath against sinners; compare (Revelation 6;27; 1Thessalonians 1:10; John 3:36; Ephesians 5:6).
“and revelation”
On the day of “Revelation” when the righteous judgment of God will be revealed we learn:
(1) That the punishment of the wicked will be just. It will not be a judgment of fickleness, or tyranny. It will be a righteous judgment, for God can do no less, for He ‘IS’ righteous (2 Thessalonians 1:16).
(2) The punishment of the wicked is in the future. While God deals out His wrath daily, His great wrath is treasured up for a future day and that day is a day like never before. This day has already been set aside. What a fearful thought for the wicked and unrepentant!
(3) How foolish and wicked to hoard up such worthless treasures for the future, only to be burnt in the fires of God’s judgement.
Verse 6
“Who will render to every man according to his deeds:”
“Who will render”
In others words, God will make retribution (punishment) as a righteous Judge, and will give to every man as he deserves - no more, no less. Unlike the corrupt courts of today, God’s court will render justice to the letter.
“to every man”
To each individual person, God makes no distinction between the Jew and the Gentile - He has no “respect of persons”. Paul writes this to the Jewish church in Rome to show them they cannot escape the Lord’s wrath simply because they are Jews.
“According to his deeds”
Everyone will be treated as each soul deserves, for God is just at all times. He will treat every man as He ought to be treated according to his character.
The word "deeds" denotes everything connected with conduct, including the acts of the mind, the motives, the principles, as well as the mere, everyday external actions. The Bible implies that God will judge people according to the whole of their conduct. This includes their thoughts, principles, and motives such as they deserve (Proverbs 24:12; Matthew 16:27; Revelation 20:12; Jeremiah 32:19).
GOD’S JUDGEMENTS
NOTE: There is no ‘General Judgement’ where the sinners are judged together with the Saints. This is often falsely taught unfortunately. The wicked will be judged at the ‘Great White Throne Judgement’ (Revelation 20:11-15) and every person there will receive damnation for rejecting Jesus as Savior.
They decided it not prudent to seek God and His gracious Gift of salvation. Instead they appear before the Judge of all men hoping He will accept their ‘good works’ as enough to gain access to Heaven. Sadly, all that appear at this inquest will be the spiritually dead and will perish in the Lake of Fire.
In striking contrast, Christians who received salvation and forgiveness through faith in the merits of the Lord Jesus Christ (Titus 3:5) will have rewards given them in Heaven that will be according to their ‘good works’ which were accomplished for Christ since the moment they were saved, or became spiritually alive. This will occur at ‘The Judgement Seat Of Christ’. (2 Corinthians 5:9-11)
Those believers who have labored and been faithful shall receive rewards for their faithfulness in the Master's service. This will be their just recompense of joy based entirely on their Christ-like character and their deeds done for Him on earth.
IMPORTANT: Sin will not be brought up at ‘The Judgement Seat Of Christ’ because God has already judged them in His Son on the cross. Remember Jesus took our sins, and in return imparted His righteousness to us. That’s when Jesus cried out from the cross “It is finished”. Man’s sins have been paid for in full - our past, present, and future sins are cast into the sea of forgetfulness never to be brought against us in judgement. God now offers His saving righteousness as a ‘GIFT’ to all who will receive it by faith! He will never force it on anyone. We have all been given free-will - a choice to accept the Lord, or reject Him. I hope you have accepted Him. To God be the glory Glory!
Verse 7
“To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:”
“To them who by patient continuance in well doing”
Paul says to anyone, Jew or Gentile alike, that they are to continue in doing well after salvation, those things which are pleasing to God once they are born again by His grace. This provides evidence to the world that a miraculous, supernatural transformation has occurred in the persons life - “by their fruit you will know them”. This divinely induced change will never be shaken off, yet it’s up to each person to do things worthy of producing fruit.
True, genuine salvation is always proceeded by a daily change of actions unto ‘good works’. If after someone claims to have been converted to Christ, but never shows any change in their lifestyle afterwards, sadly, they most likely received a counterfeit salvation. Not that they are ‘working’ to be saved, but that genuine spiritually salvation transforms a person into a “new creature”. They have “put off the old man to put on the new” continuing till God calls them home.
NOTE: This change in a new convert is called ‘daily sanctification’ and continues until ones death. It’s where the believer becomes more and more like Christ each day as they mature in God’s Word. For some there is an immediate difference in their way of living (possibly the result of growing up in a Christian family) . For others it takes longer (perhaps the result of no Christian influence or teaching in their lives).
Nevertheless, after a salvation encounter, God’s Spirit begins teaching each individual how to walk as a Christian and please the Lord as they read the Bible. Don’t make the mistake of comparing new Christian babies with each other, they all have different ‘learning curves.’ Maturity takes many years.
“Seek for”
This word denotes the act of endeavoring to find anything that is lost, (Matthew 18:12; Luke 2:48-49). It also denotes the act when a person earnestly strives, or desires to obtain something and puts forth great effort to accomplish it. For example, Matthew 6:33, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God”. (See also Acts 16:10; 1 Corinthians 10:24; and Luke 13:24).
Paul also conveys that a true believer will have an earnest and intense desire in their inner-most being for eternal life, and to serve the Lord with gladness. They will not be able to quench this thirst for God.
“Glory and honour and immortality”
These three words, “glory”, “honor”, and “immortality”, are things we long to obtain in Heaven. If we remain faithful and productive for our Savior, we shall be rewarded handsomely. Let’s look at these three words,
(1) “glory”
is a Greek word expressing praise, celebration, or anything of great beauty. It denotes that everything wicked, evil, or that has even a hint of something that is unholy will never be allowed in Heaven. No unsaved sinner will be allowed in Heaven.
(2) "honor"
implies the idea of reward, or the honor and rewards which shall be conferred in Heaven on the faithful children of God. It stands opposed to contempt, poverty, and want among people. Here on earth Christians are despised by the world. In Heaven they shall be honored by God.
(3) “immortality”
means that which is not corruptible or subject to decay. In Heaven there will be no death or deterioration. This is in striking contrast with our present condition where all things are corruptible, and will soon vanish away.
“eternal life”
To all who repent and accept the Gift of salvation by faith in Jesus Christ, they will enjoy “eternal life”, a life without end. In contrast, unbelievers will suffer eternal damnation in the Lake of Fire without end.
5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:

Verse 8
“But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation, and wrath”
“who are contentious”
This expression usually denotes those who are of a quarrelsome or unreasonable disposition, and generally has reference to controversies among people. But here it goes further and denotes an evil temperament toward God. It also signifies rebellion and opposition toward Him. It is a person who contends with the Almighty, resists His claims, rebels against His laws, and refuses to submit to His requirements.
While Paul is charging the believers at the church in Rome primarily in this letter, it also applies to all sinners of all time periods. So often we oppose the Lord and His Word and quench the Holy Spirit. We know it by heart and have no excuse, yet we are a “stiff neck” people and prone to rebellion (Deuteronomy 9:7; Deuteronomy 9:24; Isaiah 1:2; Jeremiah 5:23; Ezekiel 2:8; Ezekiel 2:5).
“Do not obey the truth”
The Word “truth” in this verse denotes the divine will of God. God ‘IS’ truth and in Him there are no lies or deception. In fact “It’s impossible for God to lie”. All of the doctrines found in His Holy Word are true in opposition to man’s way of thinking (Romans 1:18). Once we know the Word, yet fail to embrace it as a consistent life style, we have regarded it as falsehood and unworthy of our attention.
“but obey unrighteousness”
The expression means that they yielded themselves to iniquity, and thus became the servants (slaves) of sin, (Romans 6:14; Romans 6:16-17; Romans 6:19). Iniquity became their master over the people. They followed the dictates of evil, made no resistance to it, and completely disregarded its requirements.
“Indignation and wrath”
For those who do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness”, shall endure the indignation and wrath of the Lord. It is believed by some ancient scholars there is a difference between “indignation” and “wrath”, otherwise Paul repeated himself.
(1) “indignation” is thought to be shorter and temporary.
(2) “wrath” is longer, a continuing remembrance and hatred of evil.
Verse 9
“Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;”
“Tribulation”
The word “tribulation” denotes affliction. Its a word meaning to be pressed down with heavy burdens, trials, calamities, etc.
Here it’s used as meaning pain inflicted due to God’s punishment for the sins committed in the church at Rome.
“and anguish”
‘This noun is used in but three other places in the New Testament, (Romans 8:35; 2 Corinthians 6:4; 2 Corinthians 12:10). It means literally narrowness of place, lack of room. It refers to anxiety and distress of the mind which a man experiences who is pressed on every side by afflictions, trials, want, or by punishment, and who does not know where or what he may turn himself to to find relief (Schleusner.)’
In this instance Paul uses it to express the punishment of the wicked. Because of sin they will be ‘compressed’ by God’s displeasure. They will feel the mental pressure, but will have no outlet to escape.
It is thus expressive of the punishment of the wicked. It means they shall be compressed to the point of great distress not knowing where to find relief.
“Upon every soul of man”
The Hebrew word “soul” refers to the inner man himself. God is saying this punishment that will be upon the guilty sinner will be one upon the “soul” - a ‘spiritual’ punishment of the mind.
“ of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;”
There is no respecter of persons when it comes to the sins of men, Jew and Gentile alike. God is displeased with ‘all’ who continue in sin and ‘all’ will be equally judged accordingly in the after life (Romans 2:6; Psalm 7:11; Psalm 9:17; Psalm 139:19; Proverbs 14:32).
Verse 10
“But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:”
Those who obey God will receive “glory, honour, and peace”, both in this life, but especially in the life to come. The wicked shall receive eternal separation from God in the Lake of Fire at the ‘The Great White Throne Judgement’ for rejecting God’s Gift of salvation.
But the righteous will receive eternal rewards according to their works done for Christ at ‘The Judgement Seat of Christ’ because the blood of Christ has been applied to their hearts by faith in Jesus Christ.
