THIS WILL HINDER YOUR PRAYERS
By Pastor Greg Hooker
There are many things we could say about prayer. It is a very broad and deep subject found throughout the Bible.
Prayer is very important in the Christian life because it is the method by which God saw fit to let us communicate with Him. The line is open day or night. God always has the time and desire to hear from His people. In fact that’s why we were created, to fellowship and converse with Him.
Be that as it may, the Lord wanted me to share something about our prayer life that can make sure we aren’t wasting time when we pray.
According to the following passage of Scripture, there is something that will cause our prayers to come to a screeching halt. Notice:
“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us” - 1 John 5:14
God said He would hear us, but He inserted a condition, “if we ask any thing ACCORDING TO HIS WILL, he heareth us” If we are praying outside the will of God, He says ‘sorry my child, I cannot do that’. Which of the following do you think would be outside of Gods will?
Now which ones WOULD be according to Gods will? - 2 & 3
Which ones would probably NOT be according to His will? - 1 & 4
So you see, often times God doesn’t give us what we ‘want’. Why? James 4:3 gives us the answer, “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.”
Many things we ask of God are to “consume upon our own lust”.
Like a spoiled child in a candy store, we want and want and want, just to fulfill our selfish desires. In which case we are wasting our time asking the Lord for such lustful things.
In conclusion: when we pray we must strive do so according to the will of God, else our praying is in vain.
Lord give us wisdom to discern what is and isn’t according to your desire for us to have. In Jesus name.

- Lord I need this new car to keep up with my neighbor.
- Lord will you save my friend?
- Lord would you heal my neighbors wife of cancer?
- Lord would you give me a million dollars so I can live like my rich neighbor?
Now which ones WOULD be according to Gods will? - 2 & 3
