WATERMELON AND COOLAID
By Pastor Greg Hooker
“Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.” - Psalm 37:7
During my early years of growing up on my Gradpa’s farm, there was almost a “ritualistic” time when everyone knew it was time to “rest” a while. Most often this took place under a huge Maple Shade Tree next to my Grandpa’s house. Oh the good memories that brings back!
Each person - family, friends, or neighbors - would show up during this “time of rest”, grab an aluminum web-laced, folding chair and join other family members under the cool, calm, and careless atmosphere the ancient tree provided. Many times we would enjoy a cool-cold-watermelon from the underground cellar and a big pitcher of ice-cold “coolaid.”
Now you know what I’m talking about!!! Those are the days you never want to forget.
As God woke me early this morning, I read this verse as it leapt off the screen of my phone and the Lord brought it to my attention, He said “son, you’ve fought a good fight. It’s time for you to do as my Son, Jesus told His disciples to do one day. He said to them, come apart from the cares of the world and “rest awhile”. You’ve earned it. I don’t expect you to go through this life working your fingers to the bone for me. I created you to take long and consistent periods of rest. To enjoy all I have created and given you.
You see my friends, under that big maple tree we didn’t have a care in the world - not one! We could care less about those that “prospered in the way” or those that “devised wicked devises against us”. All we were thinking and talking about was how good God was making us feel underneath that big shade tree sipping on coolaid and slurping a big peice of red-juicy-sweet- watermelon.
Maybe it’s time to return to life’s big shade tree and simply “rest” and let God restore our minds, bodies, and souls. Life was made by our Creator to enjoy the “fruits of our labor”. You can’t do that if you never take a break from your “labor.”
To bad the whole world doesn’t have a big maple tree to ‘sit a spell and take a load off” as we say here in the south! I think we would be living in a much better place. Don’t you?
Give it a try! Love you all! Your friend Greg.
